*Ritual Textiles of the 21st Century, Contemporary Miniature Torah Mantles
(PRWEB) March 21, 2009 -- Smollan's contemporary Torah mantles are made from the remnants of 100's of chuppot, wedding canopies that she has designed for bridal couples all over the world,from as far a field as Stellenbosch to Hong Kong.
These little gems are created from velvet and silk, dyed by using a Japanese shibori technique .They are then stitched, embossed ,painted, embroidered, discharged,using many of the new textiles methods available today.
Smollan has devised her own method of bleeding color into the silk giving an innovative image which an capture even the finest thread.
From her commisions, where it is customary to dedicate the mantles to honour people by name, Smollan has used documents of significance in the life of the person being honoured showing their handwriting or signature,so much part of their persona, such as a soldiers love letter from 1944, or a pilots license.
Smollan who emigrated from South Africa in 1990's says "when we emigrate we are forced to leave some of our heirlooms behind. I am creating new heirlooms for the future generations to "keep and remember."
Using old laces collected over time, ribbons, buttons, threads,and re -using the remnants, I am creating new textiles from old with new significance in their own right.
The show opens 24th March 2009 through l July 26 2009.
